Helping in need is humanity. In order to help blind people and make their life easier here, we designed a circuit “safety guard for the blind” using a microcontroller. This system detects obstacles within 1 meter in the path and alerts the users.

Blindness is defined as a condition who lacks visual perception and it is always described as a situation with heavy visual impairment with decreased vision. The day to day activities of blind people are greatly affected due to the lost eyesight. Their mobility is restricted, which means they will be able to walk only in routes which they are familiar with daily routines. 

This project blind aid safety guard for visually impaired by pic microcontrollers, is focusing on the detection of objects that are in front of the user within the specific distance which works on a distance sensor used. The signaling means of the walking stick is a microcontroller and sound is produced using buzzers of different frequencies which detect obstacles and give the direction of movement to be made.

Why: Problem statement

It is very difficult for the blind people to step out without someone's  help. The goal of the project is to make life easier and simpler for the blind people. Number of people with increased visual defects are able to travel alone with the use of the latest techniques . They are guided how to travel safely and independently inside home and outside, so they are more comfortable with the surroundings.  The most common and vital mobility kit used by blind people is a walking stick. The general walking stick utilised by the blind people is not that efficient to detect the objects in front of them. They are able to detect objects which are around the stick. 

They might be using blind navigation equipment which has restricted facilities. Repeated situations have led to many difficulties in day to day normal activities of their lives and activities. Many researches and investigations were done about the daily life routines of blind people and the needs of them were recorded. The main difficulty was walking on the road to find a way or looking for a bus. They meet with accidents or they fall due to reduced eyesight. Blind people are struggling to lead their life in a normal and comfortable way.  

How: Solution description

In this project, we used the entire hardware circuit of the safety guard for blind is divided into four major sections. i.e. transmitter, receiver, switching portion, and the voice processing section. We have used an electronic safety guard system that alerts them of any obstacle or object in their path. This system alerts blind people if any objects  or obstacles are within a specified distance. This system comprises transmitter and receiver sections. The receiver section uses an embedded system which tells the voice processor to play the recorded message in case any objects are detected. In this project the embedded system is a microcontroller, which is programmed to take the appropriate action.

The Transmitter Section consists of the search button, the microcontroller and the RF transmitter module. The schematic diagram is explained. The Receiver Section consists of  the ultrasonic sensor, the  water sensor, the RF receiver module,  the buzzer,  the  vibrator and  the microcontroller.

The system makes use of ultrasonic sensors to recognize objects ahead using ultrasonic waves. After sensing objects the sensor passes over this data to the microcontroller. The microcontroller then transmits this data and calculates if the object is close enough. If the object is not that close the circuit does nothing. If the object is close the microcontroller transmits a signal to sound a buzzer. 

How is it different from competition

We did this project to help blind people with low cost and to avoid accidents.The general walking stick utilised by the blind people is not that efficient to detect the objects in front of them. They are able to detect objects which are around the stick. The conventional walking stick usually made by the visually challenged individuals is actually not efficient to discover the object in front of the user. They can only detect the things that are being hit by the walking stick. A walking stick for the visually challenged individuals using the infrared distance sensor will sense the element can become a great help to them as a result of this type of walking stick is ready to detect the object in the specific range. When an object is detected, a sound alarm from a buzzer will alert the user about the objectand the person can avoid the object safely without hitting the object. As the distance of the objects and therefore the user is closer, the loudness of the buzzer is increasing. The user is in a position to avoid the obstacles better using the newly proposed walking stick.

Who are your customers

This project is mainly designed and proposed for the blind and visually challenged individuals. This project is used for people who have trouble seeing things which other people take for granted, like road signs, traffic lights, and so forth. And also used who people are more prone to falls and other accidents with their surrounding environment. Our project is mostly used for visually challenged people or the blind people are always trying their best to be normal and comfortable surroundings. 

Project Phases and Schedule

* PLANNING - In the first phase, we made plans for the safety guard project. We studied all the safety guards for the blind related papers. Then we come to the solution.

* BLOCK DIAGRAM - We prepared a block diagram for the project. Using those steps, we started working on the project.

* CIRCUIT DIAGRAM - This is the electronic project, so we designed the circuit diagram. 

  • First we designed the Receiver section, When the transmitted signal from the transmitter is obstructed by any object lying in its path then the transmitted signal is reflected. 

  • Switching (Microcontroller) Section, Here, we use microcontroller for only switching circuits because of availability and to show how to interface an embedded system in a homemade project. 

  • Voice Processor: Voice Processor: The whole circuit of voice process is designed around IC ISD1420 (IC5) that is a 28-pin chip by Winbond.

  • Software: The source code for safety guard for blind is written in C-programming language.

* CONSTRUCTION - We made a hardware connection based on the circuit diagram.

* POWER SUPPLY UNIT - After completing the hardware connection we supply power for the unit. Then testing has been done in this project, our project is working perfectly.

TRANSMITTER SECTION  

TIMER IC 555 - The 555 timer IC is an integrated circuit used in a variety of timer, delay, pulse generation, and oscillator applications. Derivatives give two or four timing circuits in one package. 

CURRENT AMPLIFIER - A Current amplifier is an electronic circuit that increases the magnitude of current of an input signal by a fixed multiple, and feeds it to the succeeding circuit/device. 

IR DIODES - An IR LED (infrared light emitting diode) is a solid state lighting (SSL) device that emits light in the infrared range of the electromagnetic radiation spectrum. Used with infrared cameras, IR LEDs will act sort of a spot light while remaining invisible to the optic.

RECEIVER SECTION

COMPARATOR LM311 - The LM311 device is the single high speed voltage comparator. This device is designed to operate from a wide range of power-supply voltages, including ±15-V supplies for operational amplifiers and 5-V supplies for logic systems. 

AMPLIFIER - Amplifier is that generic term used to describe a circuit that produces an accumulated version of its signaling. However, not all amplifier circuits are the constant as they're classified in step with their circuit configurations and modes of operation.

IR RECEIVER TSOP 1738 - The TSOP sensor has the ability to read the output signals from home remotes like TV remote, Home theatre remote, AC remote etc.

MICROCONTROLLER AT89C51 - The AT89C51 is an age old 8-bit microcontroller from the Atmel family. It works with the popular 8051 design and hence is used by most beginners until date.

RELAY DRIVER - A Relay driver IC is an electro-magnetic switch that may be used whenever we wish to use a low voltage circuit to switch a light bulb ON and an OFF that is connected to 220V mains supply.

VOICE PROCESSOR - A vocal effects processor is a digital device that adds effects like echo, voice doubling, and reverb to enhance your vocals as you sing.
